Today, I'd like to share ten of my favourite movies with you. This isn't an exhaustive list and it's not in order. Only the ten first movies I thought about when I made this list!

"Happy birthday, dad."
Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between miniDV footage as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't.
A movie about fathers and the men they are. This movie broke my heart, made me cry and want to die. It was a real masterpiece. I wrote kind of a lengthy review/rant about it on my blog, you can find it somewhere if you want to know my thoughts on this movie. But TL;DR I really, really love this movie. I see a lot of myself in both Sophie and Calum and it's a strange feeling. I'm my father's daughter but I'm also more than that.
2. Kubo and the two strings (2016) dir. Travis Knight
"You are my quest."
Kubo mesmerizes the people in his village with his magical gift for spinning wild tales with origami. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo is forced to go on a quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father and his mystical weaponry, as well as discover his own magical powers.
I rewatch this movie almost every year and it always warm my heart. There's something so comforting within this story and its characters. And it's so, so, so beautiful? It might my favourite Laika movie! I love movies about families, either found or biological ones. These kinds of dynamics always work on me. I'm a very sentimental kind of person and these stories tend to be really sentimental. At least, it's the case with this one. Kubo is an almost perfect protagonist and you want to root for him more than anything else. He's just a little guy! With a really great character design. I love eyepatches! They're so cool! He's so cool!
3. The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) dir. Martin McDonagh
"Well, there goes that dream."
Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly end their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.
The first time I've watched this movie, I fell asleep in the middle. Not because it was boring but I was truly exhausted. When I finished it, I couldn't understand how the fuck I managed to fell asleep. It's such a great movie? It might seems like not much at first but the story and the characters are so heart wrenching. Everything about this movie feels hopeless but in a good way? I'm not sure if it makes sense but it's how I feel about it. I think every character in this movie has its flaws (except for Siobhan she never did anything wrong) and that's why it makes it such a good story. Both Padraic and Colm are a bit extreme in their own ways and they're both right to feel how they feel. It made me think about some bad friendship breakups I had, too.
4. God Help the Girl (2014) dir. Stuart Murdoch
"I've been inside my own head for way too long."
Eve is a catastrophe — low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, she meets two similarly rootless souls: posh Cass and fastidious James, and together they form a group.
This might be one of the less known movies on this list but it's such a touching and important story to me. I see myself in Eve and it's been this way since I first watched this movie, almost ten years ago. I can agree that some things feel a bit awkward and corny but I just love it too much. When I'm down, I listen to the songs and they help me to go through my day. They're simple but so, so good. I really love Emily Browning's voice. She's absolutely charming. I'm so glad I found this movie because I feel like I needed it in my life. It resonated with me ten years ago and it still do to this day. For different reasons. But it's kind of my hidden treasure. Something I care about in my own corner of the world. I never met anyone else who knew this movie before I brought it up so maybe it's mine, in some kind of way.
5. Flying Colors (2015) dir. Nobuhiro Doi
"You go and find your own dreams too, okay?"
An academically challenged high school student sets her sights on passing the entrance exam for a prestigious university.
6. Rye Lane (2023) dir. Raine Allen-Miller
"But, I'll get there... eventually."
Two twenty-somethings, both reeling from bad break-ups, connect over the course of an eventful day in South London — helping each other deal with their nightmare exes, and potentially restoring their faith in romance.
I really, really enjoy romcoms and I've probably seen most of them. The most well-known, at least. And Rye Lane was such a good watch! I didn't really expect anything and, the first time I've seen it, I went in completely blind. It was the best surprise. Dom is such a nice and kind person and Yas is literally so pretty and wonderful? I fell in love with her within the first twenty minutes of the movie. They're just so, so, so, so, so adorable and funny together! Their love story is the kind of romance I really like. Love at first sight but with kind of a twist... My babies!
7. Silver Skates (2020) dir. Michael Lockshin
"Sometimes the hardest decisions are the simplest ones to make."
1899, the Christmas-time St. Petersburg. Ice-covered rivers and canals of the capital seethe with festive activities. On the eve of the new century those who should not be destined to meet, come together.
I love figure skating and I love period movies so this story was perfect for me. It's more skating than figure but I like it nonetheless! The found family trope is really good in this one, too. Matvey and Alice are so lovely... I think about the scene in the boat many times a week. It's just that good! I just wish some things were a bit more explored but that's it. I have so much love for this movie...
8. Marrowbone (2017) dir. Sergio G. Sánchez
"We can't live in a tomb."
A young man and his three younger siblings are plagued by a sinister presence in the sprawling manor in which they live.
This story never fails to make me feel like all the sadness in the universe has made its home in my heart. There's just so much pain and melancholy, you wouldn't even imagine it's supposed to be a horror movie! Or even a thriller. For me, it's mainly a drama about a family and their demise. It's a tragedy. You wouldn't imagine what they have to go through during this movie. I love them all so much... Even Mia Goth, whom I really dislike, couldn't make me stop loving this movie. It's just that brilliant. It's just that good. If you haven't seen it yet, you really should. Even if you're not a fan of horror stories, you should still try! The plot won't disappoint you. I swear.
9. How to Steal a Million (1966) dir. William Wyler
"Explain it to me again."
A woman must steal a statue from a Paris museum to help conceal her father's art forgeries.
It might be my favourite Audrey Hepburn movie of all times!!! It's just so lovely and funny! The two main characters have such a great alchemy and their relationship is one of the best I've seen Audrey Hepburn play on screen. Like, for once, her co-star isn't thirty years older than her! He's so pretty and charming! Of course, there are a few problems with this movie but I can understand it because it was like that at the time. Kissing women without their consent was something quite normal in this kind of movies. Doesn't mean I'm okay with it, though. But it won't make me hate this movie. If you'd like something silly but still serious at time, I highly recommend you to watch it!
10. The Princess Bride (1987) dir. Rob Reiner
"As you wish."
In this enchantingly cracked fairy tale, the beautiful Princess Buttercup and the dashing Westley must overcome staggering odds to find happiness amid six-fingered swordsmen, murderous princes, Sicilians and rodents of unusual size. But even death can't stop these true lovebirds from triumphing.
I can't believe I've waited twenty-one years before watching this movie. I can't believe I'm the person I am today without this movie being part of my growth. It's everything I love about a story! It has pretty people, romance, well-crafted fight scenes, Inigo Montoya, humour and sincerity. It's such a great story! With great characters! I couldn't say a single bad thing about this movie even if I tried. I could probably watch it ten times every months and still wouldn't be bored of it. Also, it took me a really embarrassing time to notice that Westley is Lawrence from Saw...
