Yesterday, I talked to you about my journey with writing. Today, I wanted to talk a bit more about my OCs!
Ever since I started writing, I always loved creating my own little puppets, my own children in a way. Characters that I could bring with me in every universe I wanted to explore. I don't remember who was my very first OC. Does it count if it was a playmobil character? Some persona I invented while playing wolves with my friends or riding my bike around the city, pretending I was a knight? Was it a vampire from a Twilight fanfiction or some self-insert in a One Direction oneshot? I'd love to go back in time and collect every single one of them. I'd love to be able to remember them all but, unfortunately, it isn't possible. So I'll talk about the ones I remember. And the ones who are important. Nobody cares about Jeff Philips or Emma Hart. Trust me. Also, please, don't judge some of these names. I'm just not really good at names...

| Bee and Remi, my most beloved!! |
I think I should start with Esther Patterson. She's the first character I created that felt more mature. The story she's from, Blessée, was really important to me at the time. It's about a girl, Esther, being the victim of a violent and abusive father. But she believes she deserves it since her mom died while giving her birth. A lie her father told her since she was old enough to understand. Esther is a lot of me. She loves her father even though he hurts her. She doesn't know how to act differently. I wrote her when I first started realizing how despicable of a man my own father was. He never hurt me physically but I saw him hit others. Another character from this story is Jasper Wittmore. He's kind of a manic pixie boy and the kind of person I wanted to be. Open with others and kind and brave. He's the one helping Esther so she can realize she's being abused. Both of them are flawed and this story is very, very far from being good. But it helped me a lot when I wrote it. I went from writing silly stories on instagram to something that was much more personal to me. One day, I could perhaps rethink and rewrite this story. I'd change a lot of things but I think the core of it isn't that rotten.
I mentioned Instagram and so I'll talk about the three stars of my account, back in 2014. Taissa Williams, Prune Holloway (her name is the french word for plum, don't ask) and Agathe Oliver. The three of them aren't from good stories AT ALL but they're still my children. They're all pretty basic in their own ways, too. Taissa is the messy-bun and getting down with the government kind of instagram story while Prune (should I start calling her Plum?) is the manic pixie dream girl kind of protagonist. Agathe wants to die. That's basically all I recall from her story... But she probably also fights some kind of government with a messy bun, while being a manic pixie dream girl. They're extremely imperfect, them three and their stories. There's not much to salvage but, as I said, they're my children. I'll never disown them. They all have their own love interest too and, obviously, they're as uninteresting and bland as them. Prune has Andrew Osborn, a kinda offensive character since he was always called a bipolar psychopath (I was twelve and didn't know it was not a good thing to call someone and play it as a quirky character trait). Taissa has Bastian Newton, a pretty forgettable guy with brown hair and dark blue eyes. And Agathe has Chase Collins, a pretty forgettable guy with brown hair and dark brown eyes. Did I mention that Andrew also has brown hair and dark eyes?
None of these stories are really worth mentioning except for the fact that they were the start of my Instagram account. And the other characters along with the protagonists aren't good, either. Most of them shouldn't even exist, like, it doesn't make any sense that they're in these stories! They don't add anything to the plot except make the friend groups feel bigger. But no story ever needed a fifteen-people friend group!

| Taissa's story's main characters sheet I made with my friends once, and yes those were the fancast I used back in the day. I couldn't draw so I had to find something else. |
Anyway, after that, I have to talk about the Revolyutsiya gang. Revolyutsiya is a story based in a post-third world war where Russia has built heavy walls all around its country and women doesn't have any rights anymore. The protagonist is Natalya (I'll spare you the long russian surnames) and she hates her whole family. The story starts when she kills her parents and run away with her best friend, and lover, Irina. But Natalya spared her brother, Anatoly, and this choice will haunt her until the end. With Irina, Natalya joins two other friends, Yulia and Natasha. And yes, it was a conscious choice to have two different characters named Natalya and Natasha. Stupid but conscious. The four girls then join the Rebels where they meet Raoul, Ivan, Stanislav and Vyacheslav. Meanwhile, Natalya's brother decides to search for her so he joins forces with Estelle. So, we got Natalya, Anatoly, Irina, Yulia, Natasha, Raoul, Vyacheslav, Ivan, Stanislav and Estelle. And half of them are really flawed characters, but not in a good sense. Vyacheslav and Estelle are Black but, at the time, I didn't do any real researches. I just wrote what I thought would be good characters, without really thinking about their backgrounds. The setting being in a post-apocalyptic society where everything wrong with our world is exaggerated, making my only two Black characters being former slaves and having magical powers wasn't the empowering move I thought it was. In my naive mind, it showcased two strong and brave people fighting against the system. But I was only playing along the system and relying on harmful stereotypes. I know that, now, and I sincerely regret ever writing that. This is the main reason why I wanted to rewrite this story. Because these characters means a lot to me and it was one of my most beloved story but I can't just fix something like that without changing everything. So I started to rework it from the start, changing most of the plot and all the characters that needed to be changed. Estelle isn't called Estelle any longer but Dhakiya and she's not the main villain. I've always loved her a lot and I felt that she deserved to be someone great more than anyone else in there. She's now one of the protagonists of the story, too.
As for Natalya and Natasha, they're now respectively called Polina and Evnika. I couldn't change one without changing the other. Polina is mostly a new characters while Evnika is still mostly Natasha. Just under another name. And Ivan became Ilya, solely because I liked it better.
I want to do better with these characters. I'm not sure I'll ever write Revolyutsiya 2.0 but they'll always have a soft spot in my heart. I also wrote this story when I started realizing I wasn't straight and I think you can see it in the way none of these characters (except for Stanislav because he's an ass) aren't straight either. This was the turning point for my OCs, given that since then I barely had any other straight characters.
